OVERVIEW

How it Works

Ballet Repertoire
Classical
Neoclassical
Contemporary
National / Folklore
Performer
Jazz
Lyrical
Showdance
Acrodance
Hip-Hop / Street / Commercial
Tap
Musical Theatre
Ballet Repertoire
+
Variations from the classical ballet repertoire. Clean classical technique, style and faithfulness to the original choreography and music are called for. The costume matches the role the variation comes from.
Good to Know
Variation from the official GDO list. Pointe shoes allowed from age 12, mandatory in Solo from Intermediate. Protected choreographies only with written permission.
Classical / Neoclassical
+
Choreographies based on classical technique, but with modern elements: faster tempos, off-centre balances, freer arms. A story or fixed role is not necessary.
Good to Know
Not barefoot. Floor work is possible. Pointe shoes allowed from age 12, but not mandatory.
Contemporary
+
Modern techniques from Graham, Limón, Cunningham or Horton through to today's choreographers. Technical precision meets expressive, often experimental movement. Floor work is explicitly welcome.
Good to Know
No pointe shoes. Barefoot, socks or soft shoes. If a piece comes across as rather lyrical, the jury can reassign it.
Lyrical
+
Combines jazz and classical technique to tell the emotion and story of a song. Compared with Contemporary, musicality, phrasing and direct storytelling count for more.
Good to Know
The song should have vocals. The jury examines instrumental pieces closely and can reassign them.
Jazz
+
An energetic style with jumps, turns, kicks and isolations. Musicality, power and stage presence are at the centre, from classic Fosse-style jazz to today.
Good to Know
Jazz shoes or barefoot recommended, preferably no socks.
Showdance
+
A theatrical mix of different styles that cannot be assigned to any single genre. Characters, story and staging should grip the audience. A jazz base is recommended.
Good to Know
No Tap, no Hip Hop, no pure Latin or Standard. Pieces on the theme of a show or a musical belong here. No sneakers.
Acrodance
+
Dance and acrobatics in balance: the tricks serve the choreography and do not dominate it. Smooth transitions, control and safe execution are decisive.
Good to Know
If a piece comes across mainly as gymnastics, it does not go to the Finals.
Hip Hop / Street / Commercial
+
Urban styles such as Hip Hop, Locking, Popping, Krumping, Waacking, House or Commercial from music videos and shows. Musicality, rhythm and the character of the chosen style are called for.
Good to Know
Music without swear words. Groups compete as a Crew.
Tap
+
Rhythm, timing and a clear sound from the feet. The feet are the instrument: clean technique and musicality count for more here than the show.
Good to Know
Tap shoes are mandatory. No music with recorded tap sounds. A cappella is allowed.
Musical Theatre
+
A song from a stage or film musical, danced and sung. The choreography tells the story and character of the piece.
Good to Know
About half dance, half singing. In groups, everyone sings. Backing track without vocals.
Folklore
+
Traditional dances of a culture, region or country. Music, movement and costume show the tradition authentically, even if the choreography is adapted for the stage.
Good to Know
Only authentic music, no remixes.

GDO defines in the Style Descriptions which choreography belongs to which style. If, according to the jury, a choreography competes in the wrong style, it is reassigned and is not eligible for the podium.

RULES

Good to Know

Where can I find the complete rulebook?+

On globaldanceopen.com, in English. Only this rulebook is binding.

Who answers questions about scoring?+

Global Dance Open International at info@globaldanceopen.com. GDO Switzerland organises the competition locally.

Will the name of my dance studio be announced?+

No. What is announced is the start number, in English, and the title of the choreography.

Can I dance only in Switzerland, without going to the Finals?+

Yes. GDO Switzerland is a competition in its own right, with medals and feedback from the jury. Whether you accept an invitation to the Finals is your decision.

Do I have to win to qualify?+

No. A medal and qualification are two different things. A medal does not automatically mean a place in the Finals, and vice versa.

Am I qualified for the Finals with 75 points?+

Not automatically. 75 points is the minimum threshold, after which there is a selection per category and age division.

How do I qualify for the Finals?+

You need at least 75 points and one of the Finals places in your category. How many places there are depends on the entry type and style. The list of qualified dancers comes out after the event.

How does the jury score?+

An independent international jury awards points for each choreography. Depending on the style, it looks at technique, expression, musicality and stage presence. At GDO Switzerland you also receive comments from the jury, at the Finals you do not.

Does my category still take place if only a few compete?+

Yes. As a qualifier, we run all categories. However, you only get a placing with the required score.

Can I dance several solos?+

Yes, as many as you like. If you compete twice in the same category, only the higher score counts for the medal and the Finals.

How do I register?+

Online on the official Global Dance Open platform, usually through your dance studio. You can find the step-by-step guide on the How to Register page.

Do I have to be in a dance studio?+

No. You can also compete without a dance studio, in that case under your country of residence. Write to us and we will explain the registration to you.

How is age calculated?+

What counts is your age on 1 January of the competition year. For Duo, Trio, Ensemble and Crew, the oldest person counts.

Which category is the right one?+

The category is determined by dance style, entry type and age division. Which style fits is set out in the Global Dance Open Style Descriptions at globaldanceopen.com/styledescriptions. If you are unsure, you can send Global Dance Open a video: info@globaldanceopen.com.

Can anyone take part?+

Yes. Global Dance Open is open to dancers of all nationalities aged 5 to 29. Anyone who lives in Switzerland qualifies through GDO Switzerland.

Results+

The results are binding. There is no detailed score sheet in paper form.

Reclassification+

Global Dance Open defines in its Style Descriptions what belongs to each style. If, according to the jury, a choreography competes in the wrong style, it is moved to the correct category at the end and is not eligible for the podium.

Props+

Only props that are used in the dance are allowed. Setting up takes a maximum of 20 seconds, and the dancers carry them on and off themselves. Scenery is not allowed.

Routine Title+

The title is a name for the choreography. Names of dancers, dance studio, crew or place of origin do not belong in it.

Music+

Upload as MP3 via the registration system by the deadline. No swear words or offensive content, in any language. If the uploaded music is faulty, there is no repeat.

Can I rehearse on stage before my performance?+

No. Because of the tight schedule, there are no stage or spacing rehearsals.
